Abstract

The discovery of a third tRNA binding site, the E site (Rheinberger and Nierhaus, 1980; Rheinberger et al., 1981), and the introduction of a three-site model describing the elongation cycle (Rheinberger and Nierhaus, 1983) have revived discussion on the principles of protein biosynthesis. In this contribution we survey the experimental basis for the three-site model and analyze comments and criticisms.
