Abstract

ABSTRACT Isolated rural music scenes offer researchers a chance to examine networks of musical collaboration within a much tighter sphere of influence than most urban scenes can allow. The highly localized and place-bound nature of rural scenes can provide a magnifying lens through which to examine the key factors that shape their existence. Positive societal effects such as social renewal and economic impact as well as the many challenges that rural music scenes face can all be more keenly observed through ethnographic study in geographically isolated situations. This article presents a brief overview of three such music scenes.
