Abstract

ABSTRACT Through an examination of the lesbian feminist women’s music community, I examine how activists take on the often low- or no-pay work of supporting and creating community music. To explain their labor, I draw on the concept of meaningful work that sustains the core ideologies of the community, as well as addressing the identities of individuals. In doing so, I expand understandings of music within politicized communities and how the work of doing music supports the collective and empowers the individual.
