Abstract

1. 1. The total sulfhydryl groups and the number of free SH groups of hemocyanins from different sources has been determined. Hemocyanins are well characterized by their content of “half cystine”, much more than by the content of any other amino acid. 2. 2. Whereas both native and copper-free hemocyanin of the crab Eriphia spinifrons contain 1 mole SH/mole protein, no free SH group can be titrated in the native hemocyanin of the cephàlopod Octopus vulgaris. After the removal of copper, however, an average of one sulfhydryl group appears to be revealed for four copper atoms removed.
