Abstract
This paper gives a brief overview of how boundary layer solutions of Helmholtz equation can reveal the structure of planar layers, caustics and foci in three dimensions. In particular, it describes solutions that are localised near straight lines, smooth and cusped caustics and hyperbolic umbilic points as well as solutions localised near smooth prescribed boundaries.
