Abstract

The possibility of a dynamical octet enhancement in the perturbation patterns of the vector meson octet is studied by means of the Dashen-Frautschi technique. For the case in which the vector octet corresponds to a resonance in pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar scattering, the formalism pertinent to this study is developed in detail. Application of an unperturbedSU3 symmetric amplitude taken from a self-consistent model investigated by the authors shows that the relevant mass coupling shift matrix has an eigenvalue very close to unity both in the eight- and 27-representation (\(\alpha _8 = 0.98\),\(\alpha _{27} = 0.92\)). An appropriate parametrization of the model indicates no qualitative difference in the magnitude of the important eigenvalues of these two representations, thus giving no unambiguous enhancement of the eight over the 27.
