Abstract

The article analyzes the most interesting and revealing “picture books” of the 1920s, united by the theme of visiting the zoo (menagerie), so beloved by the children`s audience. This topic was addressed by famous masters of various directions: animalists who followed the traditions of realistic illustration of the late XIX – early XX centuries (V.A. Vatagin, A.N. Komarov), OST graphics (N.N. Kupreyanov, Yu.I. Pimenov), avant-gardists (V.M. Ermolaeva, K.M. Zdanevich). Their works allow for a comparison of different artistic approaches to the subject, revealing characteristic narrative patterns and genre clichés found in such publications, as well as typical images and graphic techniques.
