Abstract
A hitherto unpublished letter from Antoni Dziekoński, Treasurer of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania,dated in Bali on the Neman River (today Belarus, near Grodno) on July 10, 1789, mostlikely addressed to Ludwik Tyszkiewicz, Marshal of the Tribunal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania,contains the author’s excuse for his temporary absence. Its literary value consists in offering a vividpresentation of a genre scene related to unusual atmospheric phenomena (storm, lightning, fl ood),and an insight into everyday political relations in Lithuania at the end of the existence of the Polish--Lithuanian Commonwealth.
