Abstract
The present article' is an additional tentative to detect the origin of the story of Naboth's vineyard in 1 Kings xxi 1-20 and, on the basis of the results, to find out and interpret the message of the story. What it shares with many other such attempts is the historical-philological approach, namely the assumption that in order to understand better any ancient writing one must endeavour to reconstruct the circumstances in which that literary opus came into being. What is new here is the suggestion that the origin of a story must be established without undue consideration for scholarly orthodoxy,2 as expressed in conscious postulates or unconscious assumptions. In the present case, dealing with a story contained in the books of Kings, this means that the origin of the story must be established not on the basis of the current theories about the date of the Deuteronomistic redaction of the Historical Books
