Abstract

The ABC's use of digital technology at Ultimo has put it at the leading edge of computerised radio technology and five years ahead of the expected starting date for digital radio broadcasts in Australia. Three separate and highly innovative computer systems (Basys, D-Cart and Ouija) have changed the dynamics of ABC radio news production at the Ultimo complex. This paper is both an historical account of how this technology has spun a new thread of radio culture, and a story of conflict between the ages of steam and digitisation.
