Abstract
The excessive press reporting of an outbreak of legionnaire's disease in Australia, which constructed it as an 'epidemic' over two weeks in April 1992 is discussed. The manner in which the outbreak is reported, the transformation of the outbreak into a social problem, and the eventual loss of interest in the 'epidemic' after a successful identification of the cause, is analysed.
