Abstract

Interest in the folk architecture of Uzbekistan has increased considerably in recent years. A number of publications examine the structure of the dwelling, its solutions to problems of design, decorative techniques, etc. The study of these questions is very important since our ideas about the traditional everyday culture of the population of Uzbekistan, including the popular dwelling, has broadened considerably. Surkhan Dar'ia Oblast has been the least studied in this respect. We can name only a few works in which these questions have been touched to some degree. Thus, in an article by L. I. Rempel', the architecture of the foothill villages is examined on the basis of results of field studies by the Khamza Institute of Art History (Tashkent) in 1960-1962.1 In the studies by V. L. Voronina, the order system is described on the example of the folk architecture of the Sherabad Raion.2 The architecture of the mountain kishlaks of Surkhan-Dar'ia Oblast is dealt with in part in a dissertation by D. A. Nazilov.3
