Abstract

The fortified settlement of Metsamor, located 35 km south of Erevan, at the source of the Metsamor River, holds a special place among the many ancient remains of the Ararat valley. Archeological work has shown that the Metsamor hill was occupied from the second half of the fourth millennium b.c.; life continued here until the seventeenth century. The ancient settlement achieved its greatest development in the Early Iron Age (end of the second and beginning of the first millennia b.c.), when it became a city of around 100 hectares with a strong fortified citadel.
