Abstract
This chapter provides a full-scale analysis of the textual affinities of 4QSama. It discusses the relationship between 4QSama and the LXX. The chapter concludes that 4QSama and the MT of Chronicles reflect the same Palestinian text which is distinct from the MT of Samuel. It shows that 4QSama is joined not only by the LXX and LXX Luc, but also by the MT of Chronicles, and that their combined readings often disagree with the MT of Samuel. The chapter suggests that Josephus used a Greek rather than a Hebrew text as the basis for his paraphrase of the history of the biblical period. The relationship between the sources is determined on the basis of statistics, but a refined methodology would have been in order. In spite of criticisms, 4QSama's frequent agreement with the LXX and Josephus' biblical text has been demonstrated beyond doubt.Keywords: 4QSama; chronicles; Hebrew text; Josephus; Palestinian text; Samuel
