Abstract

In this work we analyze tenses for marking past actions in the novel Bestjelesna by Branko Brđanin Bajovic. Actions whose realization relates to the past can be expressed in the Serbian language by verbal forms which perform that as their primary function ('perfekat', 'pluskvamperfekat', 'aorist', 'imperfekat') as well as by temporally transposable forms ('prezent', 'potencijal', 'imperativ', 'futur i'). The goal of this paper is to determine the inventory of the tenses which perform the aforementioned function in the novel as well as to discover the syntactic-semantic conditions which regulate the selection of a particular verbal form in the given text. Another significant point is the examination of stylistic effects achieved by such choices on the narrative level.
