Abstract
52 Vol 4 No 2 • April/May 2013 • International Journal of Ophthalmic Practice My story through sight loss Michael Smith Written above is a quote I stumbled upon during my degree at King’s College London, and one that inspires and motivates me through what has been an immensely challenging battle with sight loss. I believe the raw material of our experience comes to us through our sensory and nervous systems, of which the most important sense is sight. I suspect the hardest sense to live without is feeling and touch, thus I acknowledge that sight is the second most important sense, without which one loses the primary source of perception and experience on which we rely. Despite being a devastating setback to my initial career ambitions, sight loss has allowed me to embark and pursue many activities and challenges I would never have experienced, and I hope in this article to convey the journey I have taken in a relatively short period of time from diagnosis and rehabilitation, to the Paralympics, and towards future career aspirations.
