Abstract
This theoretical essay draws upom economic, sociological and political ideas in order to link structural inequality to “protracted social conflict.” The meaning, determinants, and consequences of structural inequalities are specified. The linkages between protracted social conflict and economic and political structures of a society are outlined. “Development,” is hypothesized as alleviating or intensifying protracted social conflict. The complex relationships between structural inequalities and protracted social conflict are advanced. The essay relates its thrust to the contemporary research on conflict structures and international relations theory building.
