F. ; Harvey, P. M. ; Joy, M. Abstract High signal-to-noise ratio, far-infrared slit scans of the evolved mass outflow sources IRC +10216 (a carbon star) and NGC 7027 (a planetary nebula) are presented. Combined with well-known point source profiles, using nonlinear deconvolution techniques, these 50 and 100 μm scans give information on source structure that is on a scale approximately 10 times smaller than that previously achieved in the far infrared. The data lead to some significant changes in the picture of dust emission around IRC +10216, and have implications for the chemical equilibrium of molecular species in the extended envelope. For NGC 7027 the scans set limits on the temperature and spatial extent of the cold dust and show that the warmer dust grains responsible for the far-infrared emission are intimately associated with the ionized gas.
