Abstract

Philip Roth’s early short story, “Eli, The Fanatic,” reflects a stronger connection to classical Jewish texts than is usually acknowledged. This essay demonstrates that the story is a modern retelling of an ancient midrash as well as a modern Kabbalistic text in and of itself, and, in addition, that the common interpretation of the name of one of the major characters obscures an alternate reading that leads more directly to such a Kabbalistic interpretation.
