Abstract

Judaism's approach to international relations can be seen through several dimensions: (1) the narrative, rules, and ideas found in the Bible, (2) statecraft in ancient sovereign Israel, and (3) Jewish political thought that shapes the modern state of Israel. The Bible reveals a realistic understanding of international relations, but it also contains a prophetic vision of redemption and return from exile. Modern political Zionism has drawn upon this contrast, seen in the writings of two medieval authorities: Maimonides and Don Isaac Abarbanel. Jewish sovereignty may be an imperfect historical entity or prophetic beginning to a transformation of all of international relations.
