Abstract

The interplay between genetics and dermatology, both at a clinical and research level, has not been as productive as one might expect in this “Golden Age” of human genetics. The reasons for this are many, but stem mainly from the fact that many training programs in dermatology have not emphasized the utility and necessity of present-day genetic knowledge with its practical and investigative roles. I hasten to add that I do not wish to imply that genetics has not played a significant role in advancing our knowledge of certain skin disorders, as witnessed by the outstanding presentations in this text, but I feel that it could and should be doing more. The purposes of this brief paper are two-fold: (1) to outline some possible roles of genetics in dermatology at both clinical and investigative levels and, (2) to offer some suggestions as to how these roles may be more effectively fulfilled.
