Abstract

The article looks at the theory and history of the «social novel» as a genre. The theoretical aspects are based on the research of genre by professor N.L. Leiderman. The social novel concerned with a certain image of the world, which is constructed with the help of some artistic devices, can be regarded as a sub-genre. In Enlightenment Age, the ratio between social and moral aspects in the novel had not yet reached the degree typical of the Victorian novels by E. Gaskell, Ch. Dickens, etc. The article analyzes the characteristics of the social novel loo-king at E. Gaskell’s works, including the novel «Mary Barton» (1848) as an example. The idea of the individual’s moral and spiritual life being predetermined by social conditions is among the main characteristics of the social novel.
