Abstract

Abstract Friend erythroleukemia cells, induced to differentiate by dimethyl sulfoxide, display transient and permanent changes in the synthesis of plasma membrane-bound glycoproteins. Tunicamycin, an inhibitor of protein glycosylation, inhibits hemoglobin synthesis seemingly by arresting the cells just before they become irreversibly committed to differentiation. These results suggest that changes in the synthesis of plasma membrane-bound glycoproteins may play a role in the differentiation of Friend erytholeukemia cells.
