Abstract
The article is devoted to the disclosure of the image of the real person who became the hero of memoirs and even a movie hero. In the popular film “Squadron of Flying Hussars” in the 80s, based on the memoirs of the partisan poet Denis Davydov about the war of 1812, the comic image of the Cossack officer Popov is derived. The service record of this officer was discovered in the State Archive of the Rostov region; it was investigated, using comparative and anthropological methods, and showed a huge difference between a real person and a movie hero. In addition, Popov's track record highlights some little-known aspects of the life of the Cossacks during that period.
