Abstract
Because of lack of time and training, however, teachers on textbook selection committees may give little attention to the difficulty of the textbooks under consideration. Selection committees interested in readability will be wise not to rely on inspection in making a choice, for this method does not yield results that have any degree of accuracy (2). The purpose of the study reported here was to determine, through readability formulas, the readability level of nine continuous series of elementaryschool science textbooks. Three studies have been conducted to determine the difficulty of elementary-school science textbooks. These studies were concerned with textbooks for Grades 1, 4, 5, and 6.
