Abstract
Pressure sores are a serious but largely preventable complication of illness and/or disability. They are the source of much pain and discomfort for the patient and are a constant drain on scarce NHS resources. This article outlines the causes and associated risk factors of pressure sore formation. It discusses the importance of risk assessment and highlights relevant measures health-care professionals and carers can implement to reduce the problems associated with pressure sore development. It is crucial that healthcare professionals have both theoretical knowledge and sound clinical skills in order to prevent the development of pressure sores and thus promote good patient care.
