Abstract
The concept of the consultant role for allied health professionals was first conceived as part of the modernization of The NHS Plan (Department of Health, 2000a). The allied health professional consultant role would provide better outcomes for patients by retaining clinical excellence within the service (Department of Health, 2000b).
