Abstract

Teaching physics north and south of the border, teaching physics in schools and in universities has led me to form definite conclusions about the merits of the H.L.C. compared with the G.C.E. as a first step in the training of physicists. 1.—Having taught in outstanding schools on both sides of the border, I am quite sure that the traditional broad Scots course studied to H.L.C. standard is a better end in itself and is in some ways a better preparation for more advanced and specialized studies than is the English school certificate course. The standard of attainment required for the Scots H.L.C. is higher than for the English O levels in most of the principal subjects.
