Abstract

In contrast to the method and order usually associated with German pursuits, management of pharmaceutical plants showed surprisingly uneconomic and unnecessary shifting of materials between processes. Pilot plant facilities were meager. However, the industry is still intact and should be one factor leading to rehabilitation of the country and its people ANY discussion of the German pharmaceutical industry must review first a little of its early history so as to understand correctly its development and to gain a correct perspective regarding its relationship to other portions of the whole German chemical industry. Probably the statement that the entire German organic chemical industry began with Runge's discovery of aniline in 1834 is as good a way as any to begin consideration of the subject.
