Abstract

It is found from experimental results that in RbNiF 3 and RbFeF 3 below Curie temperature linear magneto-optical Faraday effect and quadratic Cotton-Mouton effect are of the same order of magnitude. An explanation of this phenomenon can be given if different microscopic mechanisms cause linear and quadratic magneto-optical effects. Faraday rotation may be as usually explained by spin-orbit coupling but it seems that exchange interaction between magnetic sublattices gives predominant contribution to the Cotton-Mouton effect.
