Abstract

Plants of Ahnfeltia plicata (Huds.) Fries collected from various localities in the North Atlantic were found to have arisen from basal tetrasporangial crusts identifiable as Porphyrodiscus simulans Batt. Tetraspores from the Porphyrodiscus crusts were cultured for the first time and were found to give rise to discs morphologically similar to those produced by the monospores of Ahnfeltia plicata.
