Abstract

A broad survey of what is known or not known about the number of illegal aliens in the United States is presented. A brief history of the present concern with the illegal alien problem and how the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service has responded to requests for numbers is first provided. The author then describes the various methodologies that have been developed to estimate the number of illegal aliens. The availability of Mexican sources of data on migration is also considered. Finally the controversy surrounding the 1980 U.S. census and its findings is described.
