Abstract
Nurse prescribers are well placed to prescribe medication for people with type 2 diabetes, but it is important that those at risk of the condition are identified before the disease develops and medication is required. This article investigates the introduction of the UK National Diabetes Prevention Programme and examines the evidence from previous programmes, all of which have confirmed the need for a concerted effort to prevent type 2 diabetes through timely diagnosis of non-diabetic hyperglycaemia and referral to diabetes prevention interventions that are focused on behavioural changes. The importance of NHS Health Checks and opportunities for primary and secondary intervention measures are also stressed.
