Abstract
Type 2 diabetes is the fastest growing health issue in the UK. The National Diabetes Prevention Programme aims to stem this tide, as Anne Phillips explains It is important that those at risk of type 2 diabetes are identified before the disease develops and medication is required in order to reduce risk—practice nurses are ideally placed to be at the forefront of identification. This article investigates the introduction of the UK National Diabetes Prevention Programme and examines the evidence from previous programmes, all of which have confirmed the need for a concerted effort to prevent type 2 diabetes through timely diagnosis of non-diabetic hyperglycaemia and referral to diabetes prevention interventions that are focused on behavioural changes. The importance of NHS Health Checks and opportunities for primary and secondary intervention measures are also stressed.
