Abstract

Mythological elements play an important role in Chinese and Russian literature. Both the Russian writer V. P. Astafуev and the Chinese writer Zhang Wei show a great interest in myth in their works. Mythological imagery and associations become an important part of their artistic approach. The mythological element of water is one of the key imagies in the works of Astafуev and Zhang Wei. Through the analysis of the water mythologeme in their works, we have identified similarities and differences in the image of water in Chinese and Russian literature. The subject of this particular comparative study is the symbolic and mythological significance of water as the origin and resurrection of life in V. P. Astafуev’s novel „The King Fish” and Zhang Wei’s novel „The Ancient Ship”.
