Abstract

The professional theatre in Canada has grown by leaps and bounds since such institutions as the Stratford Festival, the Manitoba Theatre Centre and Theatre du Nouveau Monde were first established in the late 40s and early 50s. The proliferation from five professional theatre companies 30 years ago to somewhere around 200 today has created many more training and employment opportunities for Canadian artists. Now it is generally accepted that an artist can experience a highly rewarding, if not lucrative, career in the professional theatre in this country.
