Abstract

The luminescence of several rare earth ions in the crystalline and glass modification of SrB 4O 7 is investigated, with a special stress on the transitions of the broad-band type. The luminescence of all the three divalent rare earth ions is reported and discussed. Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ show mainly broad-band emissions while Sm 2+ shows line emissions of the 5 D 0 level to the 7 F j levels. The results lead to some conclusions about the factors which determine the luminescence efficiency in glasses.
