Abstract

The luminescence of several divalent and trivalent rare earth ions in SYAM fluoride glass (33 mole% SrF 2, 16% YF 3, 35% AlF 3, 16% MgF 2) is reported, and compared with the luminescence of these ions in SrB 4O 7 glass. This study concentrates on transitions of the broad-band type. The following dopant ions are studied: Sm 2+, Eu 2+, Yb 2+, Ce 3+, Pr 3+, Eu 3+, Gd 3+ and Tb 3+. Several efficiently luminescent glasses were found. The results lead to conclusions about the factors which determine the luminescence efficiency in glasses.
