Abstract

1. 1. Rabbit reticulocyte 17-S RNA has been resolved into two components by chromatography on methylated-albumin-kieselguhr columns. 2. 2. These two components have a small, but real, difference in their base compositions and thermal hyperchromicity properties. Neither component appears to be a contamination of large ribosomal RNA. 3. 3. One of the components has the ability to enhance the incorporation of amino acids into protein when added to an Escherichia coli cell-free system. No other RNA of the reticulocyte has this ability. 4. 4. This enhancing ability is incompletely recovered from methylated-albumin-kieselguhr columns while the recovery of RNA is essentially complete. 5. 5. The properties of this component are discussed in relation to the properties which would be expected for hemoglobin messenger RNA.
