Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper explores the interaction between basic science and its application in engineering technology in the context of the author's experience in the nuclear power field. Popular and professional differences in the images of the scientist and engineer are first noted and their significance assessed. The problems and benefits of combining expertise from diverse backgrounds in major projects are then outlined with examples from the development of nuclear power. Interactions in measurement science are also discussed and finally suggestions are made for changes in the education of technical specialists which, it is hoped, would improve their responsiveness to the needs of society.
