Abstract

Commercial ship design and construction continues to be a competitive, worldwide industry, which is actively involved in applying new technology to improve the quality and reduce the cost of design and manufacturing. Computer-based methods are a key technology for ship design and construction which are undergoing rapid change and development. The changes are enalbed by the rapid advances in computer capabilities available at lower costs, which have made it possible for every sector of the ship design and construction industry to participate in the use of computer-based methods for design and/or construction. This paper presents an assessment of the state-of-art in computer based ship design technology, and discusses in particular the trend toward integration within the important aspects of the technology. The paper emphasizes integrated computer-based methods for ship design, with additional discussion of the relationship of ship design methods with ship detail design and manufacturing technology.
