Abstract

Despite advances in diagnostic medical testing and imaging, there is still a role for the autopsy in the investigation of death. This is particularly true in the field of forensic pathology. In some jurisdictions, forensic pathologists who work in medical examiner or coroner systems have become the community’s autopsy pathologists. In many hospitals, the lack of autopsy numbers and interest therein has resulted in the loss of a valuable pathologic skill. In forensics, autopsy findings have important legal and public health benefits. Four such benefits with examples are discussed.
