Abstract

The article focuses on images of a boat in Russian and Western painting, especially Realism and Impressionism art. These trends were used by many painters whose creative activities are ready for academic research now. Exploring works by these masters one can compose a kind of visual series in order to demonstrate Realists’ and Impressionists’ enthusiasm for boat imagery. Among the former there are mentioned A. Bogoliubov, I. Aivazovskii, I. Levitan, K. Korovin, and others. Among French painters there are Charles-François Daubigny, Édouard Manet, and others. The author’s aim is both to describe boat as a motif in the painting, and to define connections of technical, pictorial, and culturally anthropological aspects of a piece of art exemplifying an image of boat full of iconological and metaphorical contents, and showing difference of forms and narratives it has.
