Abstract
The HFB — cranking (HFBC) descriptions of backbending, Coriolis antipairing, pair realignment and gapless superconductivity are reviewed. The validity of the HFBC theory in the backbending region is considered by discussing (a) the significance of angular momentum fluctuations in cranked intrinsic states, (b) the HFB spectra for exactly soluble particle-plus-cotor models, and (c) the possibility that HFBC wave functions contain spurious linear combinations.
