Abstract

The ultra-fine atomic-dimensional TiO 2−x film is prepared by a sol-gel method and the quantum size effect has been studied by UV-vis spectroscopy, SEM, TEM and ab initio calculation. It is observed that there is a strong blue shift of the absorption edges for the different film species, such as tetrahedral and octahedral coordinate Ti. With increasing film thickness, the anatase phase is developed and two maxima of the reduced mass for the electron and hole in the anatase phase have been found. At the atomic-dimensional level, the mechanism of three-dimensional growth of film is discussed. When the film thickness reaches 252 Å, a nearly perfect anatase XRD diffraction pattern is observed.
