Abstract
In the late XX – early XXI century, political, economic and socio-cultural changes in Russia led to the transformation of the national education system. They also touched upon the system of teaching foreign languages, since rapidly developing international cooperation in various fields of activity required specialists who spoke foreign languages in order to establish and expand partnership contacts. The article analyzes the systemic, cultural, communicative, differentiated and competency-based approaches in teaching a foreign language, shows their development in the late XX – early XXI centuries, as well as the current state, and defines their role in the formation of both linguistic and cultural competencies in students. It is concluded that these approaches are interrelated and organically complement each other, develop intercultural communication skills, and foster respect for other cultures.
