Abstract
Our nation's research community is in the midst of an unusually stressful period. In this flat (or declining) budgetary environment, innovative science, novel collaborations, and the development of the next generation of technology are sometimes difficult to justify and support. In recognition of the increased importance of long‐range planning during such times, the Marine Geology and Geophysics (MG&G) and Ocean Drilling programs within the Ocean Sciences Division of the National Science Foundation (NSF) held a workshop titled “The Future of Marine Geosciences” (FUMAGES). The product of this workshop is to serve as a contribution to NSF's Geosciences Directorate for evaluating opportunities and needs for research, infrastructure, and education.
