Abstract
As we reflect on the future of Canada‐Europe relations, it is useful to take note of some of the great changes taking place in our societies and the enduring common interests we share. These interests were explored at a Canadian Centre for Foreign Policy Development “thinkers’ retreat” in Ottawa that brought together leading scholars, experts and journalists from across Canada and Europe (March 17–19, 2002). This report draws on their analyses of ‘A Changing Europe,’ ‘A Changing Canada,’ and the future of Trans‐Atlantic relations. Among the conclusions, it was argued that despite forces that are pulling Canada and Europe apart (e.g. North American economic integration, EU integration and enlargement), we share a core of common values and interests, including: the rule of law, human rights, democracy, social justice, environment protection, health and other quality‐of‐life issues, and respect for diversity. These common values and interests offer Canada and Europe an opportunity to re‐energize our relationships for the benefit of citizens and communities on both sides of the Atlantic. This can be achieved by building on common interests around citizenship, social and environment goals, greater economic relations, and common international objectives.
