Abstract
ABSTRACT This policy commentary reflects on public opinion preferences for defence spending in Canada in order to provide more nuance to the often-repeated assumption that support for defence spending has risen in Canada following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. While we can find evidence documenting an increase in support for additional defence spending since February 2022, this upward pattern depends on the type of opinion polls: surveys presenting trade-offs or alluding to priorities other than defence or foreign policy yield a much narrower increase in support for this policy option. We contend that these polls should be the main ones informing our understanding on this policy idea since they are more reflective of the difficult choices decision-makers are faced with.
