Abstract

The extraction of aqueous nitric acid into 1,2-dichloro ethane solutions of triphenyl phosphineoxide, Ph 3PO, tribenzyl phosphoneoxide, Bz 3PO, and tri- n-octyl phosphineoxide. TOPO, was investigated, both by partition and I.R. studies. At initial concentrations 5·10 −3–10 −1 M of organophosphorus oxides and 5·10 −2–3 M nitric acid, the concurrent reactions B (o) + H 2O (aq) ⇌ B · H 2O (o) and B (o) + H (aq) + + NO (aq) − ⇌ B·HNO 3(o) were found to be predominant. The hydration and protonation constants amount to 1·39±0·05, 1·62±0·05, > 5·10, and 1·6±0·1, 2·7±0·2, > 6·10 2 for Ph 3PO, Bz 3PO, and TOPO, respectively.
